Step-by-Step Guide: Creating Your Biblical Budget

Step 1: Calculate Your Total Income

List all sources of monthly income after tax:

  • Primary salary
  • Secondary income (spouse's salary)
  • Side hustles or part-time work
  • Rental income
  • Any other consistent income

Example for the Ndlovu family in Johannesburg:

  • Primary salary: R25,000
  • Secondary income: R12,000
  • Side business: R3,000
  • Total monthly income: R40,000

Step 2: Honor God First - Calculate Your Tithe

Before any expenses, set aside 10% of your gross income for tithing.

Remember: Tithing is part of worship. If you're new to tithing, start with what you can and work toward the full 10%.

Step 3: List Every Expense Category

Housing & Utilities (25-30% of income)

  • Rent or bond payment: R12,000
  • Electricity: R2,500 (factor in load-shedding costs!)
  • Water and municipal: R800
  • Internet and cellphone: R1,200
  • Subtotal: R16,500

Transportation (10-15% of income)

  • Car payment: R4,500
  • Fuel: R2,800 (plan for price increases)
  • Car insurance: R1,200
  • Subtotal: R8,500

Food & Groceries (10-15% of income)

  • Monthly groceries: R4,000
  • Eating out budget: R1,500
  • Subtotal: R5,500

Insurance & Medical (5-10% of income)

  • Medical aid: R2,800
  • Life insurance: R800
  • Subtotal: R3,600

Debt Payments

  • Credit cards: R2,000
  • Store accounts: R1,500
  • Subtotal: R3,500

Savings (10-20% of income)

  • Emergency fund: R1,000
  • Retirement: R2,000
  • Subtotal: R3,000

Step 4: Achieve Zero Balance

Add up all expenses and compare to income:

  • Total Income: R40,000
  • Total Expenses: R40,600
  • Balance: -R600 (Need to cut R600 or earn more)

You can't manage what you can't track - but now you can see exactly where adjustments are needed!

Common Budgeting Challenges

Challenge 1: Irregular Income

Solution: Use your lowest month as your base budget. Extra income goes to debt or savings.

Challenge 2: Fuel Price Volatility

Solution: Build a R500-R1000 buffer into your transport budget.

Challenge 3: Load-Shedding Costs

Solution: Factor in extra costs for generators, solar, dining out during power cuts.

Challenge 4: Inflation Impact

Solution: Review and adjust your budget every 3 months.
